Veterinary GI and Foreign Body Surgery

Gastrointestinal and foreign body cases often require fast decision-making, thorough diagnostics, patient stabilization, and clear coordination. Veterinary Surgical Options helps partner hospitals review and coordinate selected GI and foreign body surgeries on-site when the case, facility, and schedule are appropriate.

VSO is a scheduled referral service and does not provide after-hours emergency coverage. Time-sensitive cases are reviewed based on availability, patient stability, and whether the partner hospital can safely support the procedure and recovery.

GI cases reviewed

Depending on case details and facility capabilities, VSO may review:

  • Gastrointestinal foreign bodies
  • Exploratory abdominal surgery
  • Gastrotomy
  • Enterotomy
  • Intestinal resection and anastomosis
  • Gastropexy when appropriate
  • Selected pyloric outflow concerns
  • Other abdominal cases by consultation

Every case requires review. If the patient needs 24-hour monitoring, advanced critical care, or immediate emergency intervention that cannot be safely supported in the partner hospital, VSO will recommend a more appropriate referral pathway.

What to send before scheduling

For GI and foreign body review, partner hospitals should provide:

  • Patient history and timing of signs
  • Physical exam findings
  • Radiographs, ultrasound findings, or other imaging
  • Lab work and hydration status
  • Stabilization plan
  • Anesthesia concerns
  • Hospital monitoring and recovery capabilities
  • Current medications and pain control

Coordinating with the referring team

The referring hospital remains central to communication with the pet owner, pre-op stabilization, anesthesia support, recovery, and ongoing care. Dr. Danova coordinates with the veterinary team, performs the accepted procedure, and provides surgical documentation and postoperative instructions.

For pet owners

If your pet may have swallowed a foreign object or is showing serious gastrointestinal signs, contact your veterinarian or a local emergency hospital immediately. VSO may be involved only through scheduled coordination with a partner veterinary hospital when appropriate.

Request GI or foreign body case review

Submit the patient records, imaging, and facility details through the referral form. VSO will review feasibility and timing before confirming coverage.
